The Bible Story

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

Acts 1:1-11 tells how Jesus presented himself alive to the apostles after his suffering over forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. He told them to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the Father’s promised gift, the Holy Spirit. Jesus said they would receive power and be his witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. After blessing them, he was taken up while they watched, and a cloud hid him from their sight. As the apostles looked toward heaven, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They announced that Jesus, who had been taken up into heaven, would come again in the same way the apostles had seen him go. The passage gives a message of hope and future expectation without giving a time or further description of his return.
