The Big Idea

Waiting can be part of following Jesus. God’s promised help is worth trusting, even before we see what comes next.

The Bible Story

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

Acts 1:4–5 describes Jesus meeting with the apostles after presenting himself alive to them. While eating with them, he orders them not to leave Jerusalem. Instead, they are to wait for the Father’s promise. Jesus explains that John baptized with water, but they will soon be baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is presented here as the promised gift the apostles are waiting to receive. This passage does not describe John’s baptism scene or biography, so those details should not be added. The apostles are listening to Jesus and waiting for what the Father has promised. The account is part of Acts 1:1–11, which also describes Jesus speaking about the kingdom of God, giving the apostles a mission, blessing them, and later being taken up while they watch.
