The Bible moment
Acts 1:1–11 tells how Jesus presented himself alive to the apostles after his suffering, appearing over forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. He told them to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the Father’s promised gift, the Holy Spirit. Jesus said they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them and would be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After blessing them, Jesus was taken up while they watched, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Two men in white clothing told the apostles that Jesus would return in the same way they had seen him go into heaven. This passage gives the mission and the promise without giving a timetable for restoration or defining the kingdom as a political government.
