The Bible Story

Jesus Is Baptized

Matthew 3:13 says that Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. This is the beginning of the account. The passage identifies the Jordan River but does not name a town or give an exact location. John and Jesus are the only people in this scene. Later in Matthew 3:14–15, John tries to prevent Jesus and says that he needs to be baptized by Jesus instead. Jesus answers that John should permit it because it is fitting to fulfill all righteousness. John then permits him. The account continues with Jesus’ baptism, the heavens opening, the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Jesus, and a voice from heaven declaring, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Those later events should not be pictured in this opening scene.
