The Bible moment
Luke 2:15-16 tells us that after the angels leave, the shepherds decide to go to Bethlehem and see what has happened. They go quickly and find Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus lying in the manger. This fulfills the sign the angel had given them: a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. The shepherds had heard that Jesus was the Savior, Christ the Lord. Their visit shows their eager response to God’s good news. In the verses that follow, they tell others what they were told, and people are amazed. Mary treasures and reflects on these things, while the shepherds return glorifying and praising God. Luke presents the shepherds as witnesses who see the child and share the message they received. This scene belongs within Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, after Mary gives birth and lays him in a manger because there is no available guest space.
