Exodus 3:1–4:17

The Big Idea

God is holy and worthy of respect. When we feel afraid or unsure, we can remember that God is present and provides help for what he calls us to do.

The Bible Story

Moses and the Burning Bush

Exodus 3:2–6 tells how the angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in flames within a bush. The bush burned but was not consumed. God called Moses from the bush and told him not to come closer. Moses was to remove his sandals because he stood on holy ground. God identified himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. The passage presents the angel of the LORD’s appearance and God’s speech without explaining beyond what is written. This moment shows God’s holy presence and invites reverence. It begins the larger call in Exodus 3–4, when God speaks to Moses about Israel’s suffering, promises to be with him, and sends him to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.
