The Bible moment
Luke 5:1–11 tells how Jesus taught beside the lake and then directed Simon to lower his nets into deep water. Although Simon had worked hard without catching anything, he followed Jesus’ direction. The nets filled with so many fish that Simon and his partners, James and John, needed help from the other boat. Both boats became heavily filled. Simon responded with awe and humility. Jesus told him not to be afraid and said that from then on he would catch people. After bringing their boats to shore, Simon, James, and John left everything and followed Jesus. This passage presents trusting Jesus’ direction, responding to his call, and beginning a new purpose with him.
