The Bible Story

Crossing the Red Sea

Exodus 14:19–22 describes the angel of God and the pillar of cloud moving between Israel and the Egyptians. The cloud brings darkness to the Egyptians but gives light to Israel. Moses stretches out his hand over the sea, and the LORD drives the water back with a strong east wind. The Israelites then cross on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. The passage presents the LORD as protecting Israel while making a way through the sea. The Egyptians remain on the other side as the Israelites continue across. This scene belongs to the larger account in which Pharaoh’s army pursues Israel, but the illustration should focus on the crossing and the cloud’s protective position. The water is divided by the LORD, while Moses stretches out his hand as instructed. The people cross safely through the path the LORD provides.
