The Bible Story

Crossing the Red Sea

Exodus 14:26–29 describes the LORD telling Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea. Moses obeys, and at daybreak the waters return to their normal place, covering the pursuing Egyptians and their equipment. The Israelites are still crossing safely on dry ground, with the waters standing like walls on both sides. The passage shows the contrast between Israel’s safe deliverance and the Egyptian pursuit being stopped. The LORD, not Moses acting independently, brings about the rescue, while Moses carries out the instructed action. This moment belongs to the larger account of Israel’s escape from Egypt: Pharaoh’s forces had pursued the people into the sea after the LORD opened a path for them. The event reveals the LORD’s power over the sea and his care for Israel. The account continues by saying that the LORD saved Israel from the Egyptians, and Israel responded with fear of the LORD and trust in the LORD and Moses.
