The Bible moment
Luke 23:46-49 records that Jesus called out to the Father and committed his spirit into the Father’s hands before he died. The centurion, seeing what happened, praised God and declared Jesus righteous. The crowds left beating their breasts, showing grief. Jesus’ acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched. This passage closes the crucifixion account in Luke with mourning and with the centurion’s recognition of Jesus. It does not include burial or resurrection events. The scene should be presented reverently, using symbolic, non-graphic imagery and staying with Luke’s account.
