Jesus Prays for Forgiveness

Luke 23:26-49

The Big Idea

Jesus shows mercy even in great suffering. We can take forgiveness seriously and ask God to help us respond with mercy and truth.

The Bible Story

The Crucifixion of Jesus

Luke 23:26-49 tells how Jesus was led to the place called The Skull and crucified between two criminals. In verse 34, Luke records Jesus praying to the Father to forgive those responsible, because they did not know what they were doing. This prayer shows mercy in the midst of profound suffering, but forgiveness does not make the crucifixion less serious. Some ancient manuscripts do not include this verse, so some editions mark it with a textual note. The same passage continues with mockery, Jesus’ promise to the repentant criminal, darkness over the land from the sixth to the ninth hour, and the tearing of the temple curtain. Jesus then dies after committing his spirit to the Father. The centurion praises God and declares Jesus righteous, while the crowds mourn and others watch from a distance.
