The Big Idea

The Bible Story

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel 6:24–28 records what happened after Daniel was found alive and unharmed in the lions’ den. King Darius issued a decree addressed to all peoples, nations, and languages. It called them to fear and reverence Daniel’s God, identifying him as the living God. The decree also declared that God’s kingdom will not be destroyed and that his rule endures. The passage then says that Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and during the reign of Cyrus the Persian. This scene should focus on the king’s public recognition of God, Daniel’s continued faithful service, and the enduring rule of God. The account includes judgment on those who maliciously accused Daniel, but that punishment need not be shown here. Daniel is present as the faithful servant whose trust in God had been vindicated; the passage does not say that he authored or personally delivered the decree.
