The Bible Story

David Is Anointed King

Samuel arrives in Bethlehem after the LORD sends him to Jesse to anoint one of Jesse’s sons. The town elders meet him with concern and ask whether he has come in peace. Samuel answers that he has come in peace to sacrifice to the LORD. He invites Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice and consecrates them. This moment begins the gathering in which the LORD will reveal His chosen one. The passage does not explain why the elders were afraid, so their concern should be stated simply. It also does not describe how the consecration was carried out. The focus is on Samuel’s peaceful arrival, his obedience to the LORD, and the invitation for Jesse’s family to join the sacrifice.
