The Bible Story

Elijah on Mount Carmel

First Kings 18:41–46 describes the final scene after the events at Mount Carmel. Elijah tells Ahab to eat and drink because rain is coming. Elijah prays and sends his servant to look toward the sea. The servant looks seven times. On the seventh observation, he reports a small cloud, about the size of a hand. Elijah tells Ahab to prepare for rain. The sky grows cloudy, the wind rises, and heavy rain comes. Ahab travels toward Jezreel, while the LORD’s power comes upon Elijah and he runs ahead to Jezreel. This passage presents the rain as a hopeful close following Elijah’s prayer and watchfulness. It does not say that Elijah alone caused the rain, and it does not provide the drought’s duration in this scene.
