The Bible Story

The First Passover

In Exodus 12:21–28, Moses tells Israel’s elders to select the Passover animals and apply the blood to the lintel and two doorposts with hyssop. The marked doorways identify the Israelite homes that the LORD will pass over when judgment comes upon Egypt. Moses tells the people to remain inside until morning. The families bow down and worship, then do what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. This scene highlights the careful instructions given before the Passover and the people’s obedient response. The doorway marking is presented as the sign connected with the LORD’s protection and rescue of the marked households. The passage does not describe later travel or events after this obedience.
