The Bible Story

The First Passover

In Exodus 12:14–20, the LORD commands Israel to remember the day as a festival and to observe seven days of unleavened bread. Unleavened bread is bread made without leaven. The people are told to remove leaven from their houses. The passage also gives appointed instructions for gathering and worship on the first and seventh days. These commands belong to the Passover instructions given through Moses and Aaron while Israel was in Egypt. The festival helped Israel remember the LORD’s rescue and his protection of the marked Israelite homes. The instructions are presented as something Israelite families were to observe carefully, without adding practices beyond these verses.
