The Bible Story

The First Passover

In Exodus 12:21–28, Moses tells Israel’s elders to select the Passover animals and apply the blood with hyssop to the lintel and two doorposts. The families are to remain inside until morning. Moses explains that the LORD will pass over the marked doors and protect those homes. The people respond by bowing down and worshiping. Then they do what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. This passage presents their worship together with careful obedience: they listen, trust the instructions they have received, and follow them. The doorway marking is the sign connected with the LORD’s rescue of the Israelite households. The scene belongs within the first Passover, when Israel’s families were preparing for the LORD’s appointed deliverance from oppression. The account does not picture the LORD as a person; show faithful people responding to his command instead.
