The Bible Story

The First Passover

In Exodus 12:29-30, the LORD strikes the firstborn throughout Egypt at midnight, from Pharaoh’s household to the firstborn of prisoners and livestock. A great cry rises in Egypt. The Israelite homes are spared. Their marked doorways are connected with the rescue instructions the LORD gave through Moses and Aaron. The families had been told to prepare a Passover meal and remain inside until morning. This passage presents a solemn moment of judgment and protection. It should be explained with care, without graphic details or invented causes. The marked homes show the people following the LORD’s instructions and trusting the rescue he provided. This event belongs to the Passover story and helps explain why Israel was told to remember that night. Afterward, Pharaoh summons Moses and Aaron and tells the Israelites to leave Egypt, worship the LORD, and take their flocks and herds.
