The Bible Story

Jesus Escapes to Egypt

Matthew 2:21–23 describes what happened after Herod the Great died. An angel of the Lord had told Joseph in a dream to take Jesus and Mary to Israel. Joseph obeyed, but he learned that Archelaus, Herod’s son, was ruling Judea, so he was afraid to go there. After being warned in another dream, Joseph went to Galilee and settled the family in Nazareth. Matthew connects this settlement with what had been spoken through the prophets, saying that Jesus would be called a Nazarene. The passage does not identify which prophet or prophets Matthew means. It also distinguishes Archelaus from Herod the Great. The focus is Joseph’s obedience to God’s guidance and the family’s move to a new home in Nazareth.
