Gideon Obeys at Night

Judges 6:11–7:25

The Big Idea

Obeying God can feel difficult or frightening. With God’s help, we can choose what is right even when others may not understand.

The Bible Story

Gideon’s Three Hundred

Judges 6:25–32 tells how God commanded Gideon to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it. Gideon obeyed at night because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople. He then built an altar to the LORD and offered the second bull. In the morning, the townspeople saw what had happened and wanted Gideon put to death. Joash, Gideon’s father, answered that Baal should defend himself. The passage presents Gideon’s obedience, even while he felt afraid. It does not say that every townsman abandoned Baal, and it does not describe a conversion scene.

What children can notice

Under the night sky, Gideon works carefully near his father’s altar to Baal, with the Asherah beside it and a new altar to the LORD nearby. The destroyed idols can be shown simply as fallen stones and cut wood, keeping the emphasis on obedience rather than destruction.
