Who Is on the LORD’s Side?

Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

Worshiping anything instead of the LORD is serious. God calls his people to turn from sin and follow him faithfully.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:25–29 takes place after the Israelites worship the golden calf while Moses is on Mount Sinai. Moses has returned with the covenant tablets, seen the calf and dancing, broken the tablets, destroyed the calf, and confronted Aaron. He now sees that the people are out of control and calls at the camp gate for those who are on the LORD’s side. The sons of Levi gather to him. At Moses’ command, they strike down about three thousand men. Moses tells the sons of Levi that they have been set apart for the LORD and urges them to receive blessing. This passage presents covenant disobedience and judgment as serious matters. It should be described briefly and non-graphically, without adding identities for those struck down or changing the event into something else.

For older children, explain the violence plainly but without graphic detail. Do not soften the account into a non-event. Help learners notice the seriousness of misplaced worship, the call to faithfulness, and the chapter’s continuing themes of accountability, prayer, and mercy. Invite thoughtful discussion rather than celebrating violence.
