Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

We should turn from wrong worship, take responsibility for sin, and seek forgiveness while caring about others.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:30–35 describes what happened after the Israelites worshiped the golden calf. Moses tells them that they have sinned greatly, then goes up to the LORD to seek atonement. He confesses the people’s sin and asks for forgiveness, even offering his own name if necessary. The LORD answers that the person who sinned will be held accountable. He still commands Moses to lead the people. The passage ends by saying that the LORD struck the people with a plague because they made the calf through Aaron. The text does not say that Moses was blotted out of the book, and it does not give the plague’s duration or specific effects. This account shows both the seriousness of covenant disobedience and Moses’ concern for the Israelites. It also presents accountability alongside the LORD’s continuing direction of the people. The story belongs to the larger account of Israel’s misplaced worship at Mount Sinai, where Aaron made the golden calf from gold supplied by the people.

For families, church, and class

Use this page

This page is best for older children because the passage includes judgment and a plague. Keep the focus on repentance, accountability, Moses’ intercession, and the LORD’s mercy. Avoid graphic details, invented quotations, or saying that Moses’ offer was accepted. Families, churches, Sunday school classes, and homeschool teachers can pause to explain that prayer for others does not remove personal responsibility.
