The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:7-10 records the LORD telling Moses to go down from Mount Sinai because the Israelites have corrupted themselves, turned aside from the commanded way, and made and worshiped a golden calf. The people had asked Aaron for a visible god while Moses delayed. Aaron formed the calf from their gold, built an altar, and announced a feast. The LORD speaks of judgment and offers to make a great nation from Moses. At this moment, the warning has been given; the later events of Moses’ descent, intercession, and the people’s accountability have not yet occurred. This passage presents covenant disobedience and misplaced worship as serious matters while preparing for Moses’ concern for the people.
