The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:15–18 describes Moses descending from Mount Sinai with the covenant tablets. The tablets are not ordinary stones: they are written on both sides by God. Joshua is with Moses as they come down. From the camp, they hear a sound. Joshua suggests it sounds like the noise of war, while Moses says it is not the sound of a victory cry or a cry of defeat; he hears singing. This moment comes after the Israelites have made and worshiped a golden calf while Moses was on the mountain. The passage prepares for Moses to see what has happened and respond to the people’s covenant disobedience. It also shows that the tablets represent the covenant God gave, making the people’s misplaced worship a serious matter.
