The Bible moment
Luke 10:25–37 records Jesus’ conversation with a law expert. The man asks what he must do to inherit eternal life and later asks who his neighbor is. Jesus tells about a traveler attacked on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest and a Levite see him but pass by. A Samaritan has compassion, binds the traveler’s wounds, uses oil and wine, carries him to an inn, cares for him, and arranges payment for continued care. Jesus asks which person acted as a neighbor. The law expert answers, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus then commands him to go and do likewise. The passage presents love of God and neighbor as something to practice, not merely something to know. It also shows mercy crossing a social boundary, while avoiding an explanation for why the priest and Levite passed by.
