The Bible Story

Jacob’s Dream

Genesis 28:16–17 records Jacob’s response after his dream. He wakes and realizes that the LORD is in the place where he slept. Jacob describes the place as awesome, the house of God, and the gate of heaven. These words express his deep awe and amazement; they do not require adding extra buildings or structures to the scene. Earlier in the dream, Jacob saw a stairway or flight of steps reaching heaven, with angels going up and down. The LORD stood above it and reaffirmed promises about land, descendants, blessing to all families of the earth, presence, protection, and Jacob’s return. This passage presents the LORD as near to Jacob during his journey and assures him that he is not alone.
