Jacob Begins His Journey

Genesis 28:10-22

The Big Idea

Sometimes a story begins with a simple step forward. Jacob starts traveling, and the Bible tells us where he is going without yet explaining everything about the journey.

The Bible Story

Jacob’s Dream

Genesis 28:10 says that Jacob leaves Beersheba and travels toward Haran. This verse describes his route but does not explain the reason for his departure. The larger passage, Genesis 28:10-22, later tells how Jacob stops for the night at an unnamed place, dreams of a stairway reaching heaven with angels going up and down, and hears the LORD reaffirm promises about land, descendants, blessing to all families of the earth, presence, protection, and return. After waking, Jacob names the place Bethel. For this illustration, focus only on the beginning of the journey, before the nighttime stop and dream.
