The Big Idea

The Bible Story

Jacob’s Dream

Genesis 28:10-15 records Jacob traveling from Beersheba toward Haran and stopping for the night because the sun has set. He uses a stone as a pillow and falls asleep. In a dream, he sees a stairway or flight of steps set on earth and reaching heaven, with angels going up and down. The LORD stands above it and reaffirms promises concerning land, numerous descendants, blessing to all families of the earth, God’s presence, protection, and Jacob’s eventual return. The passage presents these as promises; it does not say they have already been fulfilled. The LORD’s appearance is not described, so the divine presence should be represented respectfully without adding physical details.
