The Bible moment
Genesis 28:10–22 tells how Jacob traveled from Beersheba toward Haran. In this part of the story, the sun had set, so Jacob stopped for the night at a place that was not yet called Bethel. He took a stone for a pillow and lay down to sleep. While sleeping, Jacob dreamed of a stairway or flight of steps reaching from earth to heaven, with angels going up and down. The LORD stood above it and spoke promises about land, descendants, blessing for all families of the earth, and God’s presence and protection. When Jacob woke, he recognized the place as special and filled with awe. Later, he set up the stone as a pillar, poured oil on it, and named the place Bethel. This page focuses only on Jacob’s quiet nighttime rest before those later events.
