Peter Remembers and Weeps

Luke 22:47–23:25

The Big Idea

Peter failed Jesus, but his sorrow shows that he understood what he had done. We can be honest about our wrong choices and turn toward God with humble hearts.

The Bible Story

Jesus Is Arrested and Tried

Luke 22:54–62 says that Jesus was seized and taken to the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance and sat in the courtyard near a fire. Three times, Peter denied knowing Jesus. After the third denial, the Lord looked at Peter. Peter remembered Jesus’ words, left, and wept bitterly. Luke presents Peter’s failure honestly, but this scene is not one of hopelessness. It is a moment of painful realization and grief. The account belongs within the larger story of Jesus’ arrest, questioning, mocking, and trial. Jesus remains at the center of the passage, while Peter’s sorrow shows the seriousness of his denial. The account should be told with compassion and without adding details from other Gospel accounts, including a rooster.
