The Bible Story

Jesus Calms the Storm

Mark 4:35–36 records that, when evening came, Jesus told his disciples to cross to the other side. They left the crowd, took Jesus with them in the boat, and began crossing the sea. Mark also says that other boats were with him. This passage introduces the journey that continues in Mark 4:37–41, when a great windstorm arises, waves fill the boat, and the disciples wake Jesus. Jesus rebukes the wind and commands the sea to be still; the storm stops, and there is a great calm. He then asks why the disciples are afraid and whether they still have no faith. The disciples respond with great fear and wonder, asking one another who Jesus is, because even the wind and sea obey him. This account presents Jesus’ authority over creation and the disciples’ growing understanding of him. It does not name the individual disciples, identify the boat as belonging to a particular person, or describe the destination beyond “the other side.”
