The Bible moment
Mark 8:22–26 tells how people bring a blind man to Jesus at Bethsaida and ask Jesus to touch him. Jesus takes the man by the hand and leads him outside the village. There, Jesus puts saliva on the man’s eyes, lays His hands on him, and asks whether he sees anything. The account describes healing in two stages. At first, the man sees people, but they look like trees walking around. Jesus lays His hands on the man’s eyes again. The man looks intently, his sight is restored, and he sees everything clearly. Jesus then sends him home and tells him not to enter the village. The passage does not explain why Jesus leads him outside, and it gives no medical explanation. It also does not suggest that blindness is a punishment or moral fault. This account should remain distinct from other Gospel accounts of blind people being healed.
