The Bible Story

Jesus Raises Jairus’s Daughter

Mark 5:21–43 tells how Jesus returned by boat and was surrounded by a large crowd. Jairus, a synagogue leader, fell at Jesus’ feet and urgently asked Jesus to come because his twelve-year-old daughter was near death. Jesus went with him. On the journey, a woman with a twelve-year illness touched Jesus’ clothing and was healed. Jesus spoke with her and sent her in peace. Then messengers from Jairus’s house reported that the girl had died and said there was no need to trouble Jesus further. Jesus told Jairus not to fear, but to believe. The account continues with Jesus going to the house, taking the child by the hand, and telling her to get up. She rose and walked. Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

Use this page

Read Mark 5:21–43 with children, pausing at this beat before continuing to the house. Explain the report gently and avoid graphic details. Invite children to notice Jesus’ compassion, Jairus’s fear, and Jesus’ call not to fear but to believe. Keep the woman’s healing distinct from the daughter’s restoration.
