The Bible moment
Mark 5:37-40 says that Jesus allowed only Peter, James, and John, together with the child’s father and mother, to accompany him. At Jairus’s house, Jesus saw people weeping and making a loud commotion. He said that the child was not dead but sleeping. The people laughed at him, and Jesus sent them outside. This moment follows Jairus’s urgent request for help and Jesus’ instruction, “Do not fear, only believe.” Mark’s account identifies Jairus as a synagogue leader and his daughter as twelve years old. The passage presents a sorrowful family situation gently, without explaining the cause of the child’s condition. The woman healed on the journey is a separate part of the same account and should not be confused with Jairus’s daughter.
