The Bible Story

Jesus Raises Jairus’s Daughter

Mark 5:41-43 records the final moment of Jesus’ visit to Jairus’s house. Jairus, a synagogue leader, had urgently asked Jesus to come because his daughter was near death. After messengers reported that she had died, Jesus told Jairus not to fear but to believe. At the house, Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John, and the child’s parents to accompany him. Jesus took the child by the hand and said, “Talitha koum,” which Mark translates as, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” She immediately rose and walked. Everyone present was astonished. Jesus then instructed them to give her something to eat and strictly told them not to let others know about this. This account shows Jesus’ compassion, authority, and attention to the child’s ordinary needs. The earlier healing of a woman on the journey is part of the same account but is a separate event.

What children can notice

Inside Jairus’s house, Jesus gently takes the girl by the hand and tells her to get up. She stands and walks while her parents and the three disciples look on in astonishment. A simple meal or food nearby can represent Jesus’ instruction to give her something to eat.
