The Bible Story

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

Mark 2:1-12 tells how Jesus returned to Capernaum and taught in a house filled with people. Four people brought a paralyzed man, but the crowd blocked the way. They opened the roof above Jesus and lowered the man on his mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he first told the man that his sins were forgiven. Some scribes questioned in their hearts why Jesus spoke this way, reasoning that only God can forgive sins. Jesus knew their thoughts and spoke about the authority of the Son of Man to forgive sins on earth. Later, he commanded the man to get up, take his mat, and go home. The man immediately rose and walked out, and the amazed crowd praised God. This passage presents forgiveness before the healing command and does not say that the man’s paralysis was caused by sin.
