The Bible Story

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

Mark 2:8-10 describes Jesus knowing in his spirit what the scribes were thinking. They questioned in their hearts why he spoke about forgiveness, reasoning that only God can forgive sins. Jesus asked which was easier: to say that sins are forgiven, or to say, “Get up, take your mat and walk.” He explained that this was so they might know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. The passage presents Jesus’ authority through his words and the purpose he states. The scribes’ question is internal, and the text does not identify them individually or add a broader debate. Forgiveness is announced before Jesus gives the command to rise and walk.
