The Bible moment
John 13:1–20 describes Jesus washing the disciples’ feet during supper before the Passover feast. Jesus knows that his hour has come, that he is returning to the Father, and that one of his own will betray him. He rises, lays aside his outer garments, ties on a towel, pours water into a basin, and begins washing and drying the disciples’ feet. When Simon Peter questions this, Jesus explains that Peter does not understand yet. Jesus says the disciples are clean, but not all of them, without naming the betrayer. Afterward, Jesus identifies himself as their Teacher and Lord, yet he has served them. He teaches them to wash one another’s feet, follow his example, and both know and do what he teaches. He also prepares them to believe and explains that receiving one whom he sends is receiving him and the One who sent him.
