The Bible Story

Joseph and His Brothers

Genesis 37:1–4 introduces Joseph and his family in Canaan. Jacob loves Joseph more than his other sons and gives him a distinctive long garment. Joseph’s brothers see this special treatment and hate him. The passage identifies Jacob’s favoritism, expressed through the garment, as the source of their resentment here. This moment begins a difficult family account. The later passage includes Joseph’s dreams, the brothers’ growing resentment, their plot against him, his sale, and Jacob’s grief, but this illustration focuses only on the opening family conflict. It does not explain God’s purpose or describe later outcomes.
