The Bible Story

Joshua and Caleb Trust God

Numbers 14:13–25 describes Moses appealing to the LORD after the Israelites fear the people and fortified cities of Canaan. Moses asks the LORD to forgive the community, remembering how the LORD has shown patience and steadfast love. The LORD pardons the people in response to Moses’ appeal, but forgiveness does not remove the consequence of their unbelief. The adults who refused to trust the LORD will not enter the land. Instead, the Israelites will wander in the wilderness for forty years, corresponding to the forty days the spies explored Canaan. Caleb is singled out for following the LORD fully, and Joshua is among those who will enter the land. The passage holds mercy and judgment together: the LORD listens to Moses’ prayer, while the people still face the result of their refusal to obey. The focus is not on a battle scene, but on Moses’ intercession, the LORD’s presence, and the serious consequence of unbelief.
