The Bible Story

The Last Supper

Luke 22:7–23 describes Jesus sharing the Passover with the apostles. When the hour comes, he reclines at the table and says he has greatly desired to eat this meal with them before difficult events lie ahead. He takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to the apostles. Jesus says, “This is my body, which is given for you,” and commands them to do this in remembrance of him. In this passage, the bread is connected with Jesus’ body given for them. Later in the meal, Luke records a separate cup statement about the new covenant and an announcement that one at the table will betray Jesus. This page focuses on the bread: Jesus gives thanks, breaks it, gives it, and calls his followers to remember him. No later church practices or details from other Gospel accounts are added.
