A Distant Request

Luke 16:19-31

The Big Idea

God’s teaching calls us to notice people in need and respond with compassion. We should listen and act rather than ignore suffering around us.

The Bible Story

The Rich Man and Lazarus

In Luke 16:19–31, Jesus tells about an unnamed rich man who lived in luxury while poor Lazarus lay at his gate, longing for food. After both men died, Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham’s side, while the rich man was in Hades. The rich man saw Abraham and Lazarus far away and asked for water. Abraham explained that a great chasm separated them, so no one could cross from one side to the other. The story presents a serious reversal of their earthly circumstances. It does not say that wealth alone explains the rich man’s judgment; it gives the contrast between their lives and conditions after death. The rich man then asked Abraham to warn his five brothers. Abraham answered that they had Moses and the Prophets and should listen to them. The story stresses the importance of hearing God’s instruction and responding to suffering and need.

What children can notice

A carefully subdued symbolic scene shows Abraham with Lazarus at his side, while the rich man is visibly far away and raises a hand in request. Avoid depicting Hades or torment graphically; use distance and posture to communicate the seriousness of the moment.
