The Bible Story

The Rich Man and Lazarus

In Luke 16:19–31, Jesus tells about an unnamed rich man who lives in luxury while poor Lazarus lies at his gate, longing for food. Both men die. Lazarus is carried by angels to Abraham’s side, while the rich man is buried. The story then describes a great separation between them and stresses that people should listen to Moses and the Prophets. The passage presents a serious reversal of earthly circumstances and calls attention to compassion, suffering, and responsibility. It does not explain how either man died, who placed Lazarus at the gate, or why the rich man had wealth. This scene focuses only on the transition described in verse 22 and avoids expanding the burial or the afterlife setting beyond the text.
