A Life of Luxury

Luke 16:19-31

The Big Idea

What we have should not make us ignore people who are suffering. God calls us to listen, care, and act with compassion.

The Bible Story

The Rich Man and Lazarus

In Luke 16:19, Jesus begins a story about an unnamed rich man who wears purple and fine linen and feasts lavishly every day. The passage does not explain how he gained his wealth or why he lived this way. This opening scene establishes a clear contrast between his abundance and Lazarus, a poor man placed at his gate. Jesus later shows the serious consequences of ignoring suffering and reminds listeners to pay attention to Moses and the Prophets. The story calls people to respond to God’s teaching with compassion and justice. It does not say that wealth alone is the reason for the rich man’s judgment; instead, it presents the contrast between the men’s lives and their later conditions. This scene should communicate luxury without making excess look admirable or desirable.
