The Bible moment
Acts 2:1 begins the account of Pentecost by saying that the apostles and other believers were all together in one place when the day arrived. The passage does not identify the building, so the scene should remain general. This gathering prepares for what follows: a sound like a rushing mighty wind, divided tongues resembling fire resting on each believer, and the Holy Spirit enabling them to speak in other languages. People from many nations hear about God’s mighty works. Peter later explains that Jesus was raised by God and is Lord and Messiah. Listeners ask what they should do; Peter speaks of repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name, forgiveness of sins, and receiving the promised Holy Spirit. About three thousand receive his word and are baptized that day.
