The Bible Story

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

Acts 2:22–36 records Peter’s message after Pentecost. Speaking to the crowd, Peter proclaims that Jesus performed mighty works, was crucified, and was raised by God. Peter uses Scripture, including words connected with David, to explain that Jesus was not left in death. God raised and exalted Jesus and made him both Lord and Messiah. David is referenced through the Scripture Peter quotes; he is not shown as part of the crowd. This passage belongs within the larger Pentecost account, when the Holy Spirit came upon the gathered believers and people from many nations heard God’s mighty works in their own languages. Peter’s speech directs attention to what God has done through Jesus and invites the crowd to understand Jesus’ identity and authority. The crucifixion should be described simply and without graphic details, while the resurrection, lordship, and Messiahship of Jesus remain central.
