The Bible Story

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Matthew 26:36–46 tells how Jesus came to Gethsemane with his disciples and went to pray. He was sorrowful and troubled, and he asked some disciples to remain and watch with him. Jesus prayed to his Father about the cup, while submitting to the Father’s will. He returned and found the disciples sleeping. Jesus urged them to watch and pray, saying that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. He prayed again, returned, and found them sleeping once more because their eyes were heavy. After praying a third time, Jesus told them to rise and go because the hour was near and his betrayer was approaching. This scene focuses on the disciples’ tiredness and Jesus’ continued prayer in Gethsemane.
