The Bible Story

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Matthew 26:36–46 tells how Jesus goes to Gethsemane with his disciples to pray. He asks some of them to remain and watch with him because he is sorrowful and troubled. Jesus prays to his Father about the cup, submitting to the Father’s will. When he returns, he finds the disciples sleeping and reminds them to watch and pray because the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Jesus goes away and prays a second time, then returns to find them sleeping again because their eyes are heavy. He leaves them once more and prays a third time, saying the same thing. This scene focuses on that third prayer. The passage does not give new wording for it, so we should not invent a quotation. Jesus’ repeated prayer shows persistence and trust during a deeply sorrowful moment.
