The Bible Story

Jesus Is Risen

Matthew 28:5-7 records the angel’s message to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. The angel tells them not to fear, announces that Jesus has risen, and shows that the tomb is empty. The women are commanded to go quickly and tell Jesus’ disciples that he is going ahead of them to Galilee, where they will see him. This passage presents the resurrection announcement as joyful good news and gives the women an important role as witnesses who carry the message to the disciples. The account identifies the second woman only as “the other Mary.”
