The Bible moment
Matthew 2:13–23 tells how an angel of the Lord warned Joseph in a dream that Herod was seeking Jesus. Joseph obeyed: he got up, took Mary and Jesus, and left for Egypt by night. The family remained there until Herod died. Matthew connects this time with Scripture. Later, Joseph was told in a dream to return to Israel. Because Archelaus, Herod’s son, ruled Judea, Joseph settled the family in Galilee, in Nazareth. This account emphasizes God’s guidance through dreams, Joseph’s obedient response, and protection of the child. Matthew also reports Herod’s cruel order and the grief that followed, but this scene focuses on the family’s safe departure rather than showing violence or pursuit.
